Canada’s north, specifically the regions of Nunavut, Nunavik, and Labrador/Nunatsiavut, is the new land of opportunity. The conference sessions aim to provide event participants with information pertaining to major developments and key partnership opportunities in nearly every sector and region.

For a listing of confirmed and invited speakers for Northern Lights 2012, check out our Schedule of Events. Conference sessions include representation from a variety of sectors and from each of the northern regions, and feature the fiollowing topics:

Session I – Northern Sovereignty: The Economic Benefits of Canada’s Sovereignty Claim to the Arctic and Other Jurisdiction’s Perspectives
Speakers with expertise in the Canadian, Russian, American and Scandinavian views on Arctic sovereignty will discuss how those countries view Canada’s claim on the Arctic and what economic benefits and opportunities are anticipated.

Session II – Mining: Major Developments, Exploration and Existing Opportunities for Regional Involvement
Leaders in the northern mining industry will discuss major developments in their respective northern regions, as well as the economic and business opportunities that exist for territorial, regional and local organizations.

Session III – Arctic Ocean Technology: Utilizing R&D to Overcome Resource Development Challenges
Invited speakers will examine the latest ocean technology research and development and offer solutions surrounding the utilization of research and development to overcome resource development challenges.

Conference Session IV - Communications Infrastructure: Moving Toward a Reliable Northern Network
This session will present information surrounding northern communications infrastructure and the need to build a stable, reliable and affordable communications network to help improve overall economic development and quality of life in Canada's eastern Arctic and North.

Session V –Northern Energy Solutions: Meeting our Energy Demands Through Alternative Technologies
Provides presenters with the opportunity to speak to current energy research and development and offer solutions to meeting northern energy demands through alternate technologies, specifically nuclear, wind, hydro, and solar technologies.

Session VI – Tourism: Impacts and Benefits at the Community Level
Invited speakers will present information relating to impacts and benefits associated with tourism initiatives and projects, and how they relate to and affect local tourism and economic development in respective northern regions and communities.

Session VII – Exploring Oil and Gas Opportunities in Canada’s Eastern Arctic and North: Resource Development vs. Environmental Impact
This session aims to provide companies the opportunity to discuss oil and gas exploration in Canada’s eastern Arctic and North region, the environmental impact of these exploration activities, adapting best-practices, and the overall outlook and plan of implementation for such oil and gas developments.

Session VIII - Climate Change: Adapting Infrastructure, Resource Management, and Community Development to Evolving Northern Conditions
Invited speakers will discuss the effects of climate change on northern resource management, the need to adapt northern infrastructure to the changing land, sea, and weather conditions, the economic impact and roles for communities and businesses, and steps to build northern climate change adaptation capacity.

Northern Ambassador’s Forum – Northlink: A Cooperative Vision for the Circumpolar Region
This forum provides Ambassadors of the circumpolar countries the opportunity to provide event participants with information relating to economic activity and infrastructure development in their respective regions, lessons-learned including the need to adapt in unique economic situations and environments, and opportunities that exist to form joint ventures with other circumpolar regions.

Session IX – Northern Transportation Solutions: Increasing, Improving and Integrating Northern Transportation Systems
Invited companies will have the opportunity to deliver transportation updates and discuss solutions to increase, improve and integrate northern transportation systems, specifically the integrated transportation systems (road, air and marine) in each region, and the inherent opportunities for northern economic development.

Session X – Building Northern Infrastructure: Key Factors in Designing and Implementing Cooperative Projects
Presenters will examine the key factors in designing and implementing northern cooperative infrastructure projects, specifically the ongoing work being done to sustain existing infrastructure projects in each of the three regions.

Conference Session XI – Skills Development: Innovative Approaches to Addressing Labour Force Challenges
This session aims to provide speakers the opportunity to present information surrounding skills shortages and development and the current innovative approaches used by organizations to address these labour force challenges, such as engaging youth and aboriginal communities.
